Mississippi Mud Pie is a decadent chocolate dessert featuring a rich chocolate cookie crust, a smooth and gooey fudge-like filling, and a light fluffy whipped cream topping. This indulgent pie combines multiple layers of chocolate flavor and texture into a dessert perfect for any occasion, from holidays to casual get-togethers. Easy to prepare and customizable, it’s a chocolate lover’s dream come true.

Ingredients

Scale

Chocolate Cookie Crust

  • 1 ½ cups chocolate cookie crumbs (use gluten-free cookies for gluten-free version)
  • 6 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted

Filling

  • 1 can (14 oz) sweetened condensed milk
  • 2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ cup chopped pecans or walnuts (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon instant coffee powder (optional for mocha twist)
  • 1 tablespoon bourbon or rum (optional for boozy boost)

Topping

  • 1 cup heavy whipping cream, chilled
  • 2 tablespoons powdered sugar (optional, for sweetness)
  • Chocolate shavings, cocoa powder, or chopped nuts for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Crust: Finely crush the chocolate cookies until they resemble coarse crumbs. In a bowl, mix the cookie crumbs with the melted butter until the mixture looks like wet sand. Press the mixture firmly into the bottom and sides of a pie plate to create an even crust. Chill the crust in the refrigerator for at least 15-20 minutes to set.
  2. Make the Filling: In a saucepan over low heat, combine the sweetened condensed milk and chocolate chips. Stir constantly until the chocolate melts and the mixture is smooth and thick like fudge. Remove from heat and quickly whisk in the eggs and vanilla extract to avoid scrambling. If desired, fold in chopped nuts, instant coffee powder, or bourbon/rum at this stage.
  3. Bake the Pie: Pour the filling over the chilled crust and spread evenly. Bake the pie in a preheated oven at 325°F (163°C) for about 25-30 minutes, or until the filling is set but still slightly soft and fudgy in the center. Avoid overbaking to keep the creamy texture intact.
  4. Cool and Top: Allow the pie to cool completely to room temperature, then refrigerate for at least 3 hours or overnight to fully set. Before serving, whip the cold heavy cream with powdered sugar until soft peaks form. Spread the whipped cream generously over the pie, and garnish with chocolate shavings, cocoa powder, or chopped nuts as desired.

Notes

  • Use quality chocolate chips for a richer, smoother filling.
  • Chill the crust well before adding filling to prevent sogginess.
  • Do not overbake; the center should remain creamy and soft.
  • Whip the cream to soft peaks for lightness and proper texture.
  • Refrigerate the pie overnight to enhance flavor and improve slicing.
  • For vegan adaptation, substitute butter and eggs with plant-based alternatives and use dairy-free whipped cream.
  • Gluten-free version can be made by using gluten-free cookie crumbs.
