Description

These Chorizo Sausage Rolls with Puff Pastry are a flavorful and easy-to-make snack featuring spicy, savory chorizo wrapped in flaky, golden puff pastry. Perfect for casual snacking, parties, or packed lunches, they come together quickly with simple ingredients and bake into irresistible, crispy, and aromatic rolls.

Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 200g chorizo sausage (spicy or sweet, according to preference)
  • 1 sheet of store-bought puff pastry
  • 1 egg (for egg wash)

Optional Ingredients

  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 clove garlic, finely chopped
  • Fresh herbs such as parsley or thyme, chopped
  • Grated cheddar or mozzarella cheese (for cheesy twist)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the filling: Remove the chorizo from its casing and crumble it into a pan over medium heat. Cook until it releases oils and becomes slightly crispy. Optionally, sauté finely chopped onion and garlic alongside for extra flavor. Remove from heat and let the mixture cool slightly before assembling.
  2. Roll out the puff pastry: On a lightly floured surface, unfold or roll the puff pastry sheet until it is slightly thinner. Cut into rectangles approximately 4 by 6 inches, adjusting size depending on your desired sausage roll dimensions.
  3. Assemble the rolls: Place a spoonful of the cooked chorizo filling onto one half of each pastry rectangle. Add any optional herbs or cheese if using. Fold the other half of the pastry over the filling and press the edges firmly to seal. Use a fork to crimp edges for a decorative finish.
  4. Brush with egg wash: Beat the egg in a small bowl and brush generously over the tops of the rolls to give them a glossy golden finish when baked.
  5. Bake until golden and hot: Place the rolls on a lined baking tray and bake in a preheated oven at 200°C (400°F) for 15-20 minutes, or until puffed, golden, and piping hot inside. Allow to cool a few minutes before serving.

Notes

  • Keep the puff pastry cold before baking to ensure maximum flakiness and rise.
  • Do not overfill the pastry to allow proper sealing and prevent bursting during baking.
  • Use a very sharp knife for clean, neat pastry cuts.
  • Brush pastry thoroughly with egg wash for an attractive golden-brown crust.
  • Allow sausage rolls to rest a few minutes after baking to let flavors settle and avoid burns from hot filling.
